It was a good month or so ago when we had the absolute pleasure of visiting The Pudding Shop in Johannesburg. We love going to Joburg as there are a number of vegan friendly restaurants to spend money on and eat our faces off. We hadn’t heard of The Pudding Shop until an awesome friend of ours had us over for burgers (really good ones – thanks Ryan!) and mentioned we should go there for breakfast the next day. We were down as soon as he told us about their butternut cinnamon waffles. That was it, we had to go eat waffles the next day.
Sadly, it was closed the following day as it was a public holiday, but Pete and I missioned and made it there the day before we left Joburg. It was so flipping delightful I just cannot wait to go back. The decor was really fresh and different and there were vines and plants all over which made it feel like we were in a fairy home. The whole menu wasn’t vegan but there sure were a lot of vegan choices. There were lots of baked treats displayed on the counter with cute little labels saying vegan on them. It was tricky trying to make a decision as we both really wanted the butternut waffles, but we also wanted to try more than one meal. In the end we ordered two flat whites, one order of butternut waffles and a spicy tofu dish which sounded amazing. It wasn’t long till our food came, and the presentation was honestly just as impressive as the taste. Both dishes looked so good and of course we had to go half/half in order to try both (probably one of the best things about being a vegan couple). I was so excited to taste the waffles, but the tofu dish was definitely one of the best tofu meals I have had.
I can’t really think of anything to complain about as I really enjoyed the whole experience of The Pudding Shop. The service was great, we didn’t have to wait very long for our food and of course, the food was f#@$ing delish. The prices were quite expensive but not really more than I was expecting. I also think that it is quite a foodie kind of place where one would go not only to eat, but for the whole experience. You can check out their site, where they even talk about veganism and promote it a little.
“Some may make the mistake of assuming that vegan food cannot be tasty or takes too much effort but at The Pudding Shop we will prove them wrong.” – quote from the site.
So do yourself a favour and get down there, vegan or no vegan.
Spicy butternut waffle served with seasonal fruit & a cashew nut cream.
Spicy tofu with a tomato, cucumber and basil salsa rolled in flat bread drizzled with a tahini dressing.
Baked vegan goodies. The chocolate cake on the left looked incredible.
This is me being enthusiastic.
